Use of slap shot in
girls hockey

Recently there has been an increase in phone calls regarding the use of the "slap shot" in girls/women hockey.  The primary questions are whether the use of the "slap shot" is legal or not.  The immediate answer is that the "slap shot" is legal at all levels of girls/women hockey. Careful reading of Rule 617[a](Note) would show that the use of the slap shot is not allowed at the "10-or-under (Squirt - Youth only)" The youth level 10-or-under only applies to the teams which contain both boy and girl players .  If this rule was meant to apply to girls/women, it would have included the second notation of girls/women but since that notation is not there, the slap shot is allowed.  Please insure that this rule is properly applied to all girls/women level games you officiate.
